An earlier post on TechUserFriendly.com discussed using Fring software to make phone calls using your Skype account, from your wi-fi enabled mobile phone. Unfortunately, however, at this time this is no longer possible. That is, you can no longer use your Skype account to make phone calls from Fring.

This had been a very useful way to make use of Skype’s call service and international calling rates from your cell phone, without the need for extra network or data fees, and without needing to be at your computer all the time.

The reason why Skype has been disabled in Fring is not exactly clear though, as both Skype and Fring seem to disagree as to what happened.

From Skype’s Blog: Fring’s mis-use of Skype software was damaging to our brand and reputation

An hour or so ago, Fring reported on their blog that we had blocked their access to Skype. I want to make one thing absolutely clear: this is untrue.

Fring was using Skype software in a way it wasn’t designed to be used – and in a way which is in breach of Skype’s API Terms of Use and End User License Agreement. We’ve been talking with Fring for some time to try to resolve this amicably.

However, over time, Fring’s mis-use of our software was increasingly damaging our brand and reputation with our customers.

…

In this case, however, there is no truth to Fring’s claims that Skype has blocked it. Fring made the decision to remove Skype functionality on its own.

From Fring’s Blog: Skype Cowardly Blocks Fring

Now that fring expanded capacity to support the huge demand for video calling for all users, Skype has blocked us from doing so.

They are afraid of open mobile communication. Cowards.

Needless to say, we are very disappointed that Skype, who once championed the cause of openness is now trying to muzzle competition, even at the expense of its own users.

We’re sorry for the inconvenience Skype has caused you.

Update: Skype Users Are Now Blocked From Making Calls Using Fring

Skype software allows you to make low-cost long distance calls from your computer, to phones or other computers around the world. Fring is a free software application for mobile phones, that easily allows you to make calls from your mobile phone, with your Skype account. Fring needs to connect to the internet to make calls, so use an existing Wi-Fi or wireless network connection to make calls without paying any extra costs. In other words, with Fring on your mobile phone, you can save money with Skype’s low long distance rates, and you can use your mobile phone when making long distance calls, without being stuck at your computer.

Why Use Fring to Make Skype Calls

The mobile phone version of Skype, Skype Mobile, may not be available for your phone, or it may not be reliable on your mobile phone (causing dropped calls or poor call quality). If you have problems using other mobile Skype software to make clear calls with good and stable connections, Fring may be a valuable free alternative for you to try.

Using Fring on a mobile phone does not require any additional costs, as compared to using Skype on a computer. If you use Fring from your mobile phone through an existing Wi-Fi or wireless connection (at your home, office, or free wireless public hotspot), then you will not need to pay any extra data fees to your phone company. This is the preferred method of using Fring, so that no additional fees are charged. Also, using Fring will not use up your phone plan’s voice call minutes.

Note: If you don’t have access to an existing Wi-Fi or wireless network, then you can use your phone’s data plan to connect to the internet. Then you would need to check if your plan covers the amount of data transfer needed. Fring’s website states that a one minute call with Fring uses about 133 Kb of data (i.e. a 20-minute long distance call would use about 2 Mb of data).

How Fring Works

Fring works on your mobile phone by logging into your Skype account and listing all of your Skype contacts. From there, you can make calls as if you were using Skype at your computer, and all applicable call charges will be charged to your Skype account (as if you were using Skype from your computer). Of course, if you have a Skype Subscription, then there will be no additional call charges for calls within your subscription area. Fees for calls outside of your subscription area will be deducted from your Skype Credit, with the amounts determined by Skype’s calling rates. If you don’t have a subscription, then you will need to have Skype Credit in order to call other phones from your mobile phone, with Fring.

How To Make Skype Calls From A Cell Phone With Free Fring Software

The following is a general guide on how to setup Skype and Fring, so that you can make long distance calls from your mobile phone, using Fring software at Skype’s calling rates (or using a Skype Subscription).
Make sure your mobile phone is connected to the internet, either through a Wi-Fi connection or through your phone’s data connection.

On your mobile phone, open Fring.

In Fring, if you do not already have a Fring account, select "New User". Setup your new Fring account and continue.

Save money on long distance phone calls by comparing costs between Skype "Pay As You Go" Credit and a Skype Monthly Subscription, based on the number of calls made per month and average PC-to-phone call [...]

There are many options available through the internet, for making long distance or out-of-area calls from a PC to a regular phone line (either to landlines or to cell phones). One of the most popular ways to make a PC-to-phone call, is by using Skype, which offers the same rates for any time of the day and any day of the week. Skype offers several payment options, but for some it can be unclear which option is the cheapest or most inexpensive.

Depending on both the number of calls you make per month and the length of your average outgoing PC-to-phone call, you can save money by using the right plan, either Skype "Pay As You Go" Credit or a Skype Monthly Subscription.
Is a Skype Subscription Good Value for You?

Depending on what kind of caller you are, and how you plan on using Skype, getting a Skype Monthly Subscription can save you a lot of money. The chart below shows how much you can expect to spend per month, based on the number of outgoing calls you may make with Skype, and the average length of each outgoing call.

If you live in the United States or Canada, and you generally call within the US and Canada, then the "Unlimited US and Canada" Monthly Subscription plan may be suitable for you.
The yellow-highlighted costs: For the specified number of calls you make per month, a Skype Subscription could be the cheapest option, depending on the length of your average outgoing call.

The green-highlighted costs: For the specified number of calls and call lengths, purchasing Skype "Pay As You Go" Credit is the cheapest option.

The red-highlighted costs: For the specified number of calls and call lengths, purchasing Skype "Pay As You Go" Credit will cost you significantly more money per month, when compared to a Skype Subscription with a fixed monthly fee. For the specified number of calls and call lengths, the Skype Subscription is the cheapest option, and will save you a significant amount of money.

As the above chart shows, depending on the type of caller you are, you could save a lot of money by purchasing a Skype Monthly Subscription to make your calls to the US and Canada, rather than Skype "Pay As You Go" Credit. This assumes that most users won’t use Skype as a full replacement for a cell phone or a home phone.

If you think that you will call often enough that your Skype Credit usage per month would be close to the monthly fee for a Skype Subscription, then it is probably a better choice for you to choose the Skype Subscription. This way, you won’t need to worry about counting the minutes of each call as you monthly credit usage approaches the subscription price, and you will never pay more than the fixed subscription price, even if you do happen to talk a little bit extra this month.

Skype Pricing Option Details

If you live in the United States or Canada, and you generally call within the US and Canada, then these are the pricing options available to you, for outgoing Skype calls, in US dollars.

Still Undecided Between Skype Credit or Subscription?

If you remain unsure or undecided about which is for you, Skype "Pay As You Go" Credit or a Skype "Unlimited US and Canada" Monthly Subscription, and you do not think that you will be making frequent outgoing calls with Skype (i.e. maybe a maximum of 1 to 3 calls per week), then you may want to act on a trial basis of sorts by first purchasing a small amount of Skype Credit. Track your credit usage over one month, then decide if "Pay As You Go" is right for you, or if a Monthly Subscription would save you money.

If you do find that you are using too much Skype Credit too fast, then you can still sign up for a Monthly Subscription. You will be able to keep all of your remaining Skype Credit, which could be used for other things like sending text messages (SMS messages) and making the occasional call outside of the US and Canada.
More Reasons to Use a Skype Monthly Subscription

Unexpected Longer Calls: You normally only make short outgoing calls, and have purchased enough Skype Credit to cover these calls, but once in a while you may end up talking for an extended time in an outgoing call, thus using up more credit than you had budgeted or planned for. This would cause you to buy more credit sooner, thus causing you to spend more money than you intended to.

No Need to Countdown Minutes: Subscription includes an unlimited number of minutes for PC-to-phone calls.

No Connection Fees: Subscriptions do not charge you any additional connection fees for the calls it covers, to the US and Canada.

Fixed Costs: The "Unlimited US and Canada" Monthly Subscription fee includes all fees required to make calls to any phone within the US and Canada.

PC-to-PC Calls: Calls between computers remain free, for voice and video calls.

More Reasons to Use Skype "Pay As You Go" Credit

Infrequent Caller: You rarely will make an outgoing call to a landline or a cell phone within the US or Canada.

Short Calls: Of the few calls you do make, they are usually only a few minutes in length.

Not Your Main Long Distance Method: You use your home phone or cell phone to make most of your long distance calls, but would like the flexibility or option to call using Skype. For example, when the home phone is being used by someone else, or when your cell phone is low on batteries.

Mainly Make PC-to-PC Calls: When you do use Skype, you use it to talk between two computers, either for PC-to-PC voice calls or for video calls, both of which are free and do not require Skype Credit.

Call Several Countries: You make calls to several different countries, outside of the US and Canada, which are not covered by the "Unlimited US and Canada" Subscription. Skype Credit is required for all calls not covered by the subscription. Alternatively, you could purchase an additional or alternative subscription if that would fit your needs and reduce your costs.

If you own a Motorola E6 (ROKR) cell phone, when listening to music with headphones or through the phone speaker, you may find that sometimes the highest volume setting is not loud enough, or conversely that sometimes the lowest volume setting is too loud. This is usually the result of being in different types of environments with differing amounts of background noise. For example, the volume is too low when traveling on a busy train, or maybe the volume is too high when listening in a quiet library or when using sound isolating earphones, such as the Shure SE110 Earphones, which require relatively lower volumes when listening.

The ability to adjust the system volume to your preferences for comfortable listening is very important, especially when trying to avoid unnecessarily high volumes that can damage your hearing. The Motorola E6 (ROKR) cell phone does not come installed with any software to change the maximum volume to a higher setting, or the minimum volume to a lower setting. An application called “VolSet”, written by another Motorola E6 user, can be installed to easily change the limits of the system volume on the E6.

Highlights of the “VolSet” Application

Change volume limits: Allows the user to adjust the various system volume settings of the Motorola E6, beyond what the phone will allow during normal operation. Up to 19 different volume settings can be adjusted including the headphone volume, speaker volume, handsfree volume, microphone volume, and more.

Silent camera: The camera click sound can be disabled and re-enabled using “VolSet”.

Restore settings: Previously adjusted volume settings can be restored the next time you start the “VolSet” application, which is particularly useful after a reboot or restart. The program needs to be re-run whenever you reboot your phone if you want to maintain or restore your changes from the previous session.

For some altered (or modded) firmware versions, “VolSet” will not increase the volume of the speaker for playing audio. However, “VolSet” can still be useful for phones with such firmware versions for changing the volumes for other options. Also, for all firmware versions, touch screen sound effects will not work after installing this program.

Easily Change System Volume By Installing “VolSet”

Warning: Just a reminder that you install programs to your phone at your own risk. TechUserFriendly.com has successfully tested the procedure detailed below, without any problems. This application will not make any permanent changes to your phone settings. If you do not like the settings or the application, you can either manually reset what your changed or else restart your phone. Touch screen sound effects will not work after installing this program.

First make sure that you can install PKG files on your Motorola E6, which requires the MPKG application (more info: Guide to Modding Your E6, section B, “How to Install MPKG”, and section C, “Installing PKG Files”).

Download “volset-0.5.pkg.zip” from: http://www.motorolafans.com/forums/a1200-applications/16224-app-volset-increases-volume-a1200-3.html#post131271

Rename “volset-0.5.pkg.zip” to “volset-0.5.pkg”; i.e. remove the “.zip” extension from the filename.

Download “volset.sh.txt” from: http://www.motorolafans.com/forums/a1200-applications/16224-app-volset-increases-volume-a1200-5.html#post132172

Rename “volset.sh.txt” to “volset.sh”; i.e. remove the “.txt” extension from the filename.

Connect the Motorola E6 cell phone to your computer. Copy “volset-0.5.pkg” to the E6 memory card root directory. Safely remove and disconnect the phone from the computer.

Install “volset-0.5.pkg” (section C, “Installing PKG Files”, Guide to Modding Your E6).

Reconnect the E6 to your computer. Copy/overwrite volset.sh to “.system/QTDownLoad/volset”. Safely remove and disconnect the phone from the computer.

Open “VolSet”, which is listed with the name “Set Volume” in the list of programs. “VolSet” asks if you want to “restore your last setting”. Select “No”.

The next screen allows you to select the range of settings that you would like to change, or to just view. Select Range “1-7″.

Do either a or b, depending on if you want to increase or decrease the headphone volume. Please be patient as there is a 3-5 second delay when selecting and changing the settings below. After running “VolSet”, while playing audio, audio will play through speaker rather than the headphones, while the headphones remain plugged into the Motorola E6. When this happens, you will need to unplug the headphones for a few seconds, then plug the headphones back in. If the problem continues, then unplug headphones for a few seconds longer and try again.

a) If the headphone volume is too loud for you on even the lowest volume setting, then select “Low” for “7) 3mm5 nomic st”. For a headset with a mic, select “Low” for “2) headset stero”. Select “Update Sound”. Select “Exit”.

b) If the headphone volume is not loud enough for you on even the highest volume setting, then select a higher level for “7) 3mm5 nomic st”. For a headset with a mic, select a higher level for “2) headset stero”. Select “Update Sound”. Select “Exit”.It is recommended to only increase these levels by 1 level at a time (i.e. from “Norm” to “+1″), then test to see if the volume meets your preference. If the volume is still not loud enough, then repeat this step. When testing the new settings, it’s highly recommended to start by playing the audio file at the lowest volume first, then increase the volume to see if it is loud enough. This is to avoid hearing damage caused by potentially setting the volume level higher than intended.

Full “VolSet” Volume Settings

The definitions for all of the Motorola E6 volume settings are not known, since these setting names originate from the manufacturer and not the author of “VolSet”. However, enough settings are understood to change the volume settings most useful to most users (full forum thread).
