This had been a very useful way to make use of Skype’s call service and international calling rates from your cell phone, without the need for extra network or data fees, and without needing to be at your computer all the time.

The reason why Skype has been disabled in Fring is not exactly clear though, as both Skype and Fring seem to disagree as to what happened.

Skype software allows you to make low-cost long distance calls from your computer, to phones or other computers around the world. Fring is a free software application for mobile phones, that easily allows you to make calls from your mobile phone, with your Skype account. Fring needs to connect to the internet to make calls, so use an existing Wi-Fi or wireless network connection to make calls without paying any extra costs. In other words, with Fring on your mobile phone, you can save money with Skype’s low long distance rates, and you can use your mobile phone when making long distance calls, without being stuck at your computer.

Why Use Fring to Make Skype Calls

The mobile phone version of Skype, Skype Mobile, may not be available for your phone, or it may not be reliable on your mobile phone (causing dropped calls or poor call quality). If you have problems using other mobile Skype software to make clear calls with good and stable connections, Fring may be a valuable free alternative for you to try.

Using Fring on a mobile phone does not require any additional costs, as compared to using Skype on a computer. If you use Fring from your mobile phone through an existing Wi-Fi or wireless connection (at your home, office, or free wireless public hotspot), then you will not need to pay any extra data fees to your phone company. Of course, if you have a Skype Subscription, then there will be no additional call charges for calls within your subscription area. Fees for calls outside of your subscription area will be deducted from your Skype Credit, with the amounts determined by Skype’s calling rates. If you don’t have a subscription, then you will need to have Skype Credit in order to call other phones from your mobile phone, with Fring.

How To Make Skype Calls From A Cell Phone With Free Fring Software

The following is a general guide on how to setup Skype and Fring, so that you can make long distance calls from your mobile phone, using Fring software at Skype’s calling rates (or using a Skype Subscription). Screenshots are from the Android phone version of Fring; versions on other phones are similar but instructions for different phones will have slight differences.

1. If you do not have a Skype account, download the latest version of Skype to your computer. Install and run Skype to setup a free account.
2. Purchase Skype Credit or a Skype Subscription, if you want to use your Skype account to call mobile phones or landline phones.
3. Download Fring in one of several ways. It is available for the iPhone, Android phones, Symbian phones (Nokia, Sony Ericsson), and Windows Mobile phones.
4. Make sure your mobile phone is connected to the internet, either through a Wi-Fi connection or through your phone’s data connection.
5. On your mobile phone, open Fring.

   

6. In Fring, if you do not already have a Fring account, select "New User". Setup your new Fring account and continue.

   

7. Enter your Fring login details and continue. 

   

8. In Fring, go to "Add-ons" and select "Skype". Enter your Skype login details (user ID and password) and log in. A green checkmark will appear next to "Skype" in the Fring "Add-ons" list, after your Skype and Fring accounts are successfully connected.
    
9. Go to your Fring contact list and you should see your Skype contacts are now displayed, if you have any. You can now make Skype calls to your Skype contacts using Fring, by selecting the option to call as a "SkypeOut" call or by choosing "SKP" when calling a contact.
10. Use the Dialer to make Skype calls to other phones, not listed in your contacts. Make sure to dial the phone number as a Skype call by selecting the option to call as a "SkypeOut" call or by choosing "SKP" when calling.

Some basic photo post-processing can make your photographs look better. Using the free demo version of Neat Image noise reduction software, JPEG photos taken with the Panasonic ZS3 (or any other camera) can be improved or cleaned-up by following a simple process.

Before Processing Photos from the Panasonic ZS3

Note: Download links can be found at the end of this article.

There are a few free software programs that you will need before you can carry on with the noise reduction of your Panasonic ZS3 JPEG photos.

1. Neat Image, noise reduction software, free demo edition.
2. (optional) FastStone Image Viewer, a free image viewer, or any other software to compare images side-by-side.
3. (optional) PhotoME, a free EXIF data viewer/editor, restores the original photo’s EXIF data to the processed photo. The demo version of Neat Image does not save EXIF data.

Reduce Noise in Panasonic ZS3 JPEG Photos

Note: Make sure to always keep an unaltered backup copy of the original photo JPEG file.

In Neat Image:

1. Click "Open input image" and select the image you wish to apply noise reduction to. If you have multiple copies at different resolutions for the same photo, please use the largest resolution photo you can. 
    
    
2. Click the "Device Noise Profile" tab, then click "Auto Profile". 
    
    
3. Click the "Noise Filter Settings" tab, then choose a "Filter Preset" from the drop-down menu.    
    
      
   Under the "Advanced" menu of the "Filter Preset" drop-down menu, choose a setting that matches what needs to be fixed in your photo. For photos that need only noise reduction, without having any other issues, the filter settings that will work well are "Remove only half of stronger noise (keep fewer details)" and "Remove only half of weaker noise (keep more details)". Of course, other settings may work best for your particular photo, depending at the degree and type of noise in your photo.
    
    
4. Click "Preview" and adjust the zoom to preview the changes. Click the left mouse button and drag the white square outline to choose which area you want to preview the changes for. Release the left mouse button to preview the changes. If you are not satisfied with the changes, or just want to see what effect other filter presets would have on your photo, then go back to step 3 above to choose and preview another filter preset.
    
    
5. When you are satisfied with the chosen filter preset, click the "Output Image" tab, then click "Apply" to apply the changes to the image. Then click "Save output image" to save the changes.
    
   
     
6. The first time you save an image after opening Neat Image, you will see this pop-up describing the limits of the demo version of Neat Image. For most users these limits will not be an issue, since the image file is saved at a high quality, and the EXIF data can be copied from the original image to the processed image using a tool such as PhotoME.
    
    

After Processing Panasonic ZS3 Photos with Neat Image

Once you have finished processing your photo with Neat Image, then you may want to compare the processed photo to the original photo. You may want to use the free software program FastStone Image Viewer, or else any other software of your choice that can compare photos side-by-side.

In the free FastStone Image Viewer, make sure the "Smooth" checkbox in the toolbar is unchecked. Select the two photos you wish to compare, then in the file menu go to "Tools" and select "Compare Images" (or use the keyboard shortcut "P" key). Inspect the photos side-by-side and at different zoom levels to see if the results are an improvement.
 

Save Photo EXIF Information

The demo edition of Neat Image does not save or transfer the original photo EXIF information to your processed photo. But you can still transfer the original photo EXIF information to your processed photo with free software, such as the free software program PhotoME.

In PhotoME, open the original photo. Use "Open file" from the file menu, or use the PhotoME file browser by clicking the icon next to the words "File Menu". It is faster to use the PhotoME file browser if working with many files.

Then select "Export Exif data" from the file menu and save the EXIF data for the original photo. Open the processed photo, then select "Import Exif data" from the file menu. Click "Save file" to save your processed photo with the photo’s original EXIF information.

CrossLoop is an easy-to-use alternative to the Remote Assistance tool in Windows, because it requires no additional work on by either user, other than for both sides to start the CrossLoop program and for the Needy-User to giving an Access Code to the Helper (likely through phone or email). The Access Code ensures a secure connection. Neither modifying firewall settings, or changing router settings, is needed as CrossLoop is able to establish a connection on its own, saving a lot of time and trouble, since the Needy-User is likely not an expert on firewall or router settings.

Overview of How CrossLoop Works

Both the Helper and the Needy-User will need to have CrossLoop installed on their computers to proceed.

Signing up for an account is not necessary, but it is free to sign up for an account if you do.

The Needy-User will need to pass along an Access Code to the Helper, in order for the two computers to be connected. Once connected, the Helper can control the Needy-User’s mouse movements, and thus control the Needy-User’s computer, until one of the sides ends the session.

Detailed Step-By-Step Instructions for CrossLoop

The same procedure can be followed every time you need to help another person via CrossLoop.

1. Both users start the CrossLoop remote assistance software program.
    
2. Users then can either login with their CrossLoop account email and password, or they can skip the login if they don’t have a CrossLoop account. You don’t need an account to use CrossLoop.
    
3. Both users will then need to connect using CrossLoop.
    
   a. The Needy-User will need to click on the grey “Share” tab. There will be a 12-digit “Access Code” there that will need to be passed along to the Helper, for example, by phone, email, Skype, or instant-message.
    
   b. The Helper will need to click on the green “Access” tab, if it is not already displayed. The 12-digit “Access Code” from the Needy-User will need to be entered here, in the “Access Code” blank space.
    
4. When the Helper has the Access Code and is ready, then both users can click on the green “Connect” button in the bottom right corner of the CrossLoop program.
    
5. For the Needy-User, CrossLoop will then ask if they want to allow the Helper to be able to control the mouse on their computer. Once the Needy-User clicks to allow this, then the two computers will be connected and the Helper will be able to control the Needy-User’s computer. The Helper can then proceed to fix whatever problems the Needy-User is having with their computer.
    
6. When finished, in the CrossLoop software window, either user can click disconnect to end the session, then close the program.

CrossLoop can be a free, quick, and simple way to help fix the computer problems of a parent, friend, or relative who is not very knowledgeable with computers, and may be in another city or country. To edit AVCHD Lite video (.mts), it is easier to first convert a copy of the video to an AVI file (.avi). This is easier because there are not a lot of software options available to edit ".mts" files, and some computers may not be able to play back ".mts" files very smoothly.

For some computers, converting AVCHD Lite video from an MTS file to an AVI file can give smoother and sharper video playback, even if you do not intend to edit the video.

Before Converting AVCHD Lite Video (MTS to AVI)

There are a few free software programs that you will need before you can convert and edit your AVCHD Lite video.

1. Format Factory, a free audio and video file format converter.
2. VirtualDub, a free video editor.

Also, transfer your AVCHD Lite ".mts" video file to your computer, if you haven’t already.

Convert Panasonic Lumix ZS3 AVCHD Lite Video

1. Open Format Factory.
2. Click "All to AVI" on the left side, under "Video".

   

3. In the new window that opens, click "Add File", then select your file.

    

4. After selecting the AVCHD Lite file you wish to convert, click on "Output Setting".

    

5. Under "Profile", select "High quality and size". Set "FPS" to "25". Set "Video Encode" to whichever codec you prefer. "AVC(H264)", "MPEG(Xvid)", or "MPEG(DivX)" will all work fine, for example. Although it is not necessary, you may get better results if you also set the Video Stream Bitrate to match the Video Bitrate of the original MTS file, though file conversion may take longer.

    

6. Return to the main Format Factory window by clicking "OK" to exit the settings window, then clicking "OK" to exit the "All to AVI" windows.

    

7. In the main Format Factory window, click "Start" to begin the file format conversion.

    

8. When the conversion is completed, test out the AVI video in any media player. You do not need the original MTS file anymore, but it is recommended that you keep it as a backup.

You can convert to any other file format you like with Format Factory, other than AVI, but just make sure to keep the FPS setting at "25". For easier editing in the next section, it is recommended to convert to AVI as described above.

Edit Panasonic Lumix ZS3 Video

1. Open VirtualDub.
2. Open your video file by going to the "File" menu, then "Open video file".
3. In the "Video" menu, click "Direct stream copy". This will ensure that your video file will not be re-encoded or compressed to a lower quality.

    

4. Use the commands in the "Go" menu to move back and forth through the video’s timeline.

    
    

   Use the commands in the "Edit" menu to delete and re-position sections of the video.

    

   For a section of video that you want to delete, move along the timeline to the beginning of the unwanted section, and press the "Home" key on your keyboard to "Set selection start", as in the "Edit" menu. Then move to the end of the unwanted section, and press the "End" key on your keyboard to "Set selection end", as in the "Edit" menu. Press the "Delete" key on your keyboard to delete this selection.

   For a section of video that you want to re-position, use the "Home" and "End" keys to mark a selection of the video, as above. Press CTRL+X to cut the selection of video. Move along the timeline to where you want to insert the selection of video. Press CTRL+V to past the selection of video.

5. When you have finished editing the video, then in the "File" menu, click "Save as AVI" to name and save your video.

Alternatively Use VirtualDubMOD

If you have any issues with audio or video in VirtualDub, you may want to try VirtualDubMOD instead. All of the controls and instructions are the same, so you can use it the same way that you would use VirtualDub.

The ability to adjust the system volume to your preferences for comfortable listening is very important, especially when trying to avoid unnecessarily high volumes that can damage your hearing. The Motorola E6 (ROKR) cell phone does not come installed with any software to change the maximum volume to a higher setting, or the minimum volume to a lower setting. An application called “VolSet”, written by another Motorola E6 user, can be installed to easily change the limits of the system volume on the E6.

Highlights of the “VolSet” Application

• Change volume limits: Allows the user to adjust the various system volume settings of the Motorola E6, beyond what the phone will allow during normal operation. Up to 19 different volume settings can be adjusted including the headphone volume, speaker volume, handsfree volume, microphone volume, and more.
• Silent camera: The camera click sound can be disabled and re-enabled using “VolSet”.
• Restore settings: Previously adjusted volume settings can be restored the next time you start the “VolSet” application, which is particularly useful after a reboot or restart. The program needs to be re-run whenever you reboot your phone if you want to maintain or restore your changes from the previous session.

Easily Change System Volume By Installing “VolSet”

Warning: Just a reminder that you install programs to your phone at your own risk. TechUserFriendly.com has successfully tested the procedure detailed below, without any problems. This application will not make any permanent changes to your phone settings. If you do not like the settings or the application, you can either manually reset what your changed or else restart your phone. Touch screen sound effects will not work after installing this program.

First make sure that you can install PKG files on your Motorola E6, which requires the MPKG application (more info: Guide to Modding Your E6, section B, “How to Install MPKG”, and section C, “Installing PKG Files”).

1. Download “volset-0.5.pkg.zip” from: http://www.motorolafans.com/forums/a1200-applications/16224-app-volset-increases-volume-a1200-3.html#post131271
2. Rename “volset-0.5.pkg.zip” to “volset-0.5.pkg”; i.e. remove the “.zip” extension from the filename.

4. Rename “volset.sh.txt” to “volset.sh”; i.e. remove the “.txt” extension from the filename.
5. Connect the Motorola E6 cell phone to your computer. Copy “volset-0.5.pkg” to the E6 memory card root directory. Safely remove and disconnect the phone from the computer.
6. Install “volset-0.5.pkg” (section C, “Installing PKG Files”, Guide to Modding Your E6).
7. Reconnect the E6 to your computer. Copy/overwrite volset.sh to “.system/QTDownLoad/volset”. Safely remove and disconnect the phone from the computer.
8. Open “VolSet”, which is listed with the name “Set Volume” in the list of programs. “VolSet” asks if you want to “restore your last setting”. Select “No”.

   

9. The next screen allows you to select the range of settings that you would like to change, or to just view. Select Range “1-7″.

   

10. Do either a or b, depending on if you want to increase or decrease the headphone volume. Please be patient as there is a 3-5 second delay when selecting and changing the settings below. After running “VolSet”, while playing audio, audio will play through speaker rather than the headphones, while the headphones remain plugged into the Motorola E6. When this happens, you will need to unplug the headphones for a few seconds, then plug the headphones back in. If the problem continues, then unplug headphones for a few seconds longer and try again.

    a) If the headphone volume is too loud for you on even the lowest volume setting, then select “Low” for “7) 3mm5 nomic st”. For a headset with a mic, select “Low” for “2) headset stero”. Select “Update Sound”. Select “Exit”.

    

    b) If the headphone volume is not loud enough for you on even the highest volume setting, then select a higher level for “7) 3mm5 nomic st”. For a headset with a mic, select a higher level for “2) headset stero”. Select “Update Sound”. Select “Exit”.It is recommended to only increase these levels by 1 level at a time (i.e. from “Norm” to “+1″), then test to see if the volume meets your preference. If the volume is still not loud enough, then repeat this step. When testing the new settings, it’s highly recommended to start by playing the audio file at the lowest volume first, then increase the volume to see if it is loud enough. This is to avoid hearing damage caused by potentially setting the volume level higher than intended.

11. Do either a or b, depending on if you want to increase or decrease the speaker volume. Please be patient as there is a 3-5 second delay when selecting and changing the settings below.

    a) If the speaker volume is too loud for you on even the lowest volume setting, then re-open VolSet and select Range “1-7″ again. Select “Low” for “1) loudspk music”. Select “Update Sound”. Select “Exit”.

    b) If the speaker volume is not loud enough for you on even the highest volume setting, then re-open VolSet and select Range “1-7″ again. Select a higher level for “1) loudspk music”. Select “Update Sound”. Select “Exit”.It is recommended to only increase these levels by 1 level at a time (i.e. from “Norm” to “+1″), then test to see if the volume meets your preference. If the volume is still not loud enough, then repeat this step. When testing the new settings, it’s highly recommended to start by playing the audio file at the lowest volume first, then increase the volume to see if it is loud enough.
